Once all of the
basic story, character and plot details have been finalized, the artist then
begins his work. This usually starts with the Layout process. The artist will
make a "thumbnail" of the actual comic page on a small piece of paper in order
to experiment with various layouts and page versions. Then, the artist
will render the thumbnail on an 8 by 11 sized paper, starting only with the
pencils. After the penciling is finished, the inker will use various types of
pens to ink over the pencil art. When the inked page is dry, a kneaded eraser is used
to "clean up" the extra pencil strokes on the page. The finished page is now
ready for scanning.
