Once
all of the basic story, character and plot details have been finalized,
the artist then begins his work. This usually starts with the
Layout process. The artist will make a "thumbnail" of
the actual comic page on a small piece of paper in order to experiment
with various layouts and page versions. Once satisfied, the artist
will then render the thumbnail on an 8 by 11 sized paper, starting
only with the pencils. Once penciling is finished, the inker will
then use various types of pens to ink over the pencil art. After
the ink is dry, a kneaded eraser is used to "clean up"
the extra pencil strokes on the page. The finished page is now
ready for scanning.
